Understanding and Treating Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition marked by shifts between emotional highs and lows that can affect energy, sleep, judgment, and daily functioning. With accurate diagnosis and consistent care, it is highly manageable. I provide precision psychiatric care across the full bipolar spectrum, helping you understand your specific diagnosis and build a treatment plan that supports long-term stability rather than only easing symptoms in the moment.

TYPES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

Bipolar disorder is not a single condition. Bipolar I involves full manic episodes that may include psychosis, while Bipolar II involves hypomania alongside longer depressive periods. Cyclothymic disorder brings chronic mood shifts that are less intense but still disruptive. Identifying which pattern fits your experience is the first step, because the type shapes the treatment approach and the medications most likely to help.

RECOGNIZING THE SYMPTOMS

Manic and hypomanic phases can bring elevated mood, racing thoughts, reduced need for sleep, and impulsive decisions. Depressive phases can bring low mood, fatigue, loss of interest, and difficulty concentrating. Because the depressive side is often more frequent and more disabling, bipolar disorder is sometimes mistaken for depression. Tracking the pattern of episodes over time is central to an accurate diagnosis.

ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis relies on a structured clinical evaluation rather than a checklist. I review your history of mood episodes, sleep and energy patterns, family history, and any co-occurring anxiety or substance use, using established diagnostic criteria. Getting the diagnosis right matters, because treatment for bipolar disorder differs from treatment for depression, and the wrong medication can sometimes worsen mood instability.

TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Treatment usually combines medication with therapy and lifestyle support. Mood stabilizers, and in some cases antipsychotics or carefully chosen antidepressants, help reduce the frequency and intensity of episodes, while therapy supports emotional regulation and steady routines.

LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT AND SUPPORT

Bipolar disorder is a long-term condition, and consistent follow-up is what keeps it stable. I monitor your response over time, adjust the plan as your symptoms and life change, and watch for co-occurring concerns such as anxiety, sleep problems, or substance use. Whole-person care, including attention to sleep, nutrition, and routine, supports both mood stability and overall wellbeing.

Why molecular biology matters to your treatment

Most psychiatric prescribing is trial-and-error. My background in
molecular biology — MSc from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with
research at the Weizmann Institute and Mt Sinai — lets me think about
your case at the level of biological pathways, not just symptom
checklists. That means fewer wasted medication trials and a clearer
rationale for every decision.

Who I treat

Adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety, depression, ADHD,
bipolar disorder, OCD, eating disorders, and complex or treatment-
resistant cases. I work especially well with patients who've been let
down by rushed 15-minute medication checks elsewhere.

What your first visit looks like

A 60-minute initial evaluation — in person at my Fort Lee office or via
telehealth anywhere in NJ or NY. We'll go through your full history,
current symptoms, prior treatments, and biological context. You leave
with a clear diagnosis and a specific medication plan, not a maybe.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About
Anger Medication

Things patients usually want to know before reaching out.

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition that causes shifts between emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These shifts affect energy, sleep, thinking, and behavior, and they range in intensity depending on the type. It is a long-term but highly manageable condition, and with accurate diagnosis and consistent care, most people achieve meaningful stability.

What are the different types of bipolar disorder?

The main types are Bipolar I, which involves full manic episodes; Bipolar II, which involves hypomania and often more frequent depression; and cyclothymic disorder, which brings chronic but milder mood shifts. Each type has a different pattern and calls for a tailored approach, which is why accurate diagnosis is the essential first step.

How is bipolar disorder diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical evaluation of your mood history, sleep and energy patterns, family history, and any co-occurring conditions, using established diagnostic criteria. Because the depressive phase is often more noticeable, bipolar disorder can be mistaken for depression, so identifying past manic or hypomanic episodes is a key part of getting the diagnosis right.

How is bipolar disorder treated?

Treatment usually combines medication, therapy, and lifestyle support. Mood stabilizers are often central, sometimes alongside antipsychotics or carefully selected antidepressants, with therapy to support emotional regulation and steady routines. You can read more about the specific medications, dosing, and monitoring on my bipolar medication NJ page.

Can bipolar disorder be mistaken for other conditions?

Yes. It is commonly confused with depression, and it can overlap with ADHD, anxiety, or borderline traits because of shared features like impulsivity and mood reactivity. A careful evaluation distinguishes bipolar disorder from these conditions, which matters because treatment differs and some antidepressants used alone can destabilize mood in bipolar disorder.

Is bipolar disorder a lifelong condition?

Bipolar disorder is generally a long-term condition, but it is highly manageable with ongoing care. Many people live full, stable lives with a consistent treatment plan and regular follow-up. The focus is on reducing the frequency and intensity of episodes and on catching early warning signs before they escalate, rather than expecting a one-time fix.

Do you treat conditions that occur alongside bipolar disorder?

Yes. Bipolar disorder often occurs with anxiety, ADHD, sleep disturbances, or substance use, and I treat the whole picture. Where ADHD and bipolar overlap, for example, I stabilize mood before introducing stimulant medication. Coordinating care across co-occurring conditions is an important part of long-term stability.

Is telehealth available for bipolar medication management?

Yes. Medication management for bipolar disorder is available by secure telehealth across New Jersey and New York, in addition to in-person visits in Fort Lee. Telehealth improves access and supports regular follow-up, which matters for a condition that benefits from consistent monitoring. A full evaluation remains part of responsible care whether visits are virtual or in person.

How do I get started?

Getting started begins with a request through the appointment form on the website. From there, I review your history, current symptoms, and any prior treatment during a comprehensive in-person or telehealth evaluation, then map out a plan together. Your information is handled confidentially under HIPAA.
