WHY A PSYCHIATRIST REFERRAL NYC

What Makes This Practice Different

Biology-First Prescribing

Most psychiatric prescribing is educated guesswork. Michael’s MSc in molecular biology — Hebrew University of Jerusalem, research at Weizmann & Mt Sinai — means every medication decision connects to a specific biological pathway, not pattern-matching. Fewer wasted trials. Clearer rationale.

All Ages, One Practice

Children, adolescents, and adults — no age-group silos. Parents are full partners in pediatric treatment planning. Whether it’s a first anxiety diagnosis in a teenager or a complex adult case that’s resisted prior treatment, I treat the full range.

60-Minute Appointments

Insurance-driven practices give you 15 minutes and a prescription. Initial evaluations here are a full 60 minutes — time for a real history, proper diagnosis, and a specific plan. Follow-ups are 30 minutes with direct portal access between visits.

Why molecular biology matters to your treatment

Most psychiatric prescribing is trial-and-error. My background in
molecular biology — MSc from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with
research at the Weizmann Institute and Mt Sinai — lets me think about
your case at the level of biological pathways, not just symptom
checklists. That means fewer wasted medication trials and a clearer
rationale for every decision.

Who I treat

Adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety, depression, ADHD,
bipolar disorder, OCD, eating disorders, and complex or treatment-
resistant cases. I work especially well with patients who've been let
down by rushed 15-minute medication checks elsewhere.

What your first visit looks like

A 60-minute initial evaluation — in person at my Fort Lee office or via
telehealth anywhere in NJ or NY. We'll go through your full history,
current symptoms, prior treatments, and biological context. You leave
with a clear diagnosis and a specific medication plan, not a maybe.

FEES & INSURANCE

Self-Pay Practice with Superbill for Out-of-Network Reimbursement

I don’t bill insurance directly — and that’s intentional. Insurance-driven psychiatry means 15-minute appointments, rigid formularies, and a provider who barely knows your case. This practice is self-pay so I can give you 60-minute evaluations and make medication decisions based on what’s right for your biology, not what's on the insurer's approved list. Most patients with out-of-network benefits recover 50–80% of fees by submitting the detailed superbill I provide at every visit.

FAQ

Common Questions for a Psychiatrist Referral NYC

Things patients usually want to know before reaching out.

Do I need a psychiatrist referral in NYC to see Gimel Health?

No formal psychiatrist referral NYC is required to book an appointment at Gimel Health. Patients can self-refer directly by contacting us online or by phone. That said, if your primary care physician or therapist has recommended a psychiatric medication evaluation, we’re a natural next step. Some insurance plans do require a referral for out-of-network reimbursement, so it’s worth checking with your insurance provider before your first visit.

What Conditions Does Gimel Health Treat?

I treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including mood disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, borderline personality disorder, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. I also work with patients managing ADHD, sleep disorders, and substance abuse issues where these overlap with other psychiatric conditions.

What's the difference between a psychiatrist, a PA-C in psychiatry, and a therapist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. A psychiatric physician associate (PA-C) like Michael Feldman has equivalent prescribing authority and provides the same psychiatric medication evaluations and medication management. A therapist provides talk-based mental health treatment, such as individual psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, or group therapy, but cannot prescribe medication. Many patients get the best results working with both a psychiatric provider and a therapist side by side.

Is Gimel Health close to New York City?

Yes. Gimel Health is located in Fort Lee, NJ, directly across the George Washington Bridge from upper Manhattan. For many New Yorkers, it’s actually easier to reach than practices located deep in the city. Gimel Health serves patients across the greater New York City area, including patients traveling from New York City, Staten Island, Long Island City, Suffern, Monsey, Nanuet, Warwick, White Plains, Tarrytown, and surrounding areas in New Jersey. Appointments are also available for patients across New York State who prefer remote visits.

Can Gimel Health help with substance use disorders?

I have experience treating patients where substance use disorders and substance abuse overlap with conditions like mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and bipolar disorder. If substance use is the primary concern, I may refer you to specialized outpatient treatment or behavioral health services better suited to that level of care. Always with your mental health journey and quality of life in mind.

Do you offer in-person appointments, telehealth (virtual) appointments, or both?

At Gimel Health, I offer in-person, telehealth, and hybrid appointment options to meet your needs and preferences. However, in accordance with clinical best practices and legal guidelines, your first visit must take place in person, unless a rare exception applies. After the initial evaluation, follow-up appointments may be conducted virtually, depending on your situation and current state regulations. My goal is to deliver flexible, high-quality care while upholding standards that ensure effective and responsible treatment.

Does Gimel Health work with other providers like therapists or outpatient programs?

Absolutely. I actively collaborate with therapists, counselors, and outpatient services already involved in your care. Whether your therapist provides cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, family therapy, or group therapy, I coordinate on the medication management side to make sure both parts of your treatment approach are aligned. I also work with patients who are stepping down from inpatient services or outpatient programs and need ongoing psychiatric support.

Most people searching for a psychiatrist referral NYC don’t really want another provider who rushes through a 10-minute appointment and hands them a generic treatment plan on the way out. They want someone who actually listens. Someone who looks at what’s really driving the problem, not just the symptoms on the surface.

What if I'm in a mental health crisis or having suicidal thoughts?

Gimel Health is an outpatient practice and is not set up for psychiatric emergency situations. If you or a family member is experiencing a psychiatric emergency, suicidal thoughts, or severe emotional distress, please call 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) immediately. Trained counselors are available 24/7. You can also visit your nearest emergency room or contact the NJ Crisis Lifeline for support.

Do you work with other healthcare providers (e.g., therapists, primary care physicians, etc.)?

Yes, I strongly support a collaborative, team-based approach to mental healthcare. With your consent, I’m glad to coordinate with your therapist, primary care physician, or any other healthcare providers involved in your care. At Gimel Health, I believe that open communication among providers often leads to more effective treatment and better long-term outcomes, especially when navigating complex or overlapping medical and psychiatric concerns.
