Whole-Person ADHD Care for Long-Term Focus and Control

Effective adult ADHD treatment goes beyond a prescription. I combine medication management with therapy, coaching, and practical strategies built around your daily life, whether you are newly diagnosed or moving from childhood ADHD into adulthood. The aim is durable improvement in focus, organization, and emotional regulation, guided by an accurate diagnosis rather than a rushed medication check.

COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSIS AND ASSESSMENT

Diagnosis of adult ADHD requires a structured evaluation, not a quick checklist. I assess persistent inattention, impulsivity, disorganization, and executive dysfunction that began in childhood and continue today, alongside academic, occupational, and relational history. I also screen for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and substance use, since these can mimic or accompany ADHD. Accurate diagnosis is what makes targeted, effective treatment possible.

PERSONALIZED TREATMENT PLANNING

Your plan is built around your symptom profile, medical history, and goals. It may combine ADHD medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, skills training, and lifestyle strategies such as structured routines and physical activity. I coordinate care over time, adjusting the approach as your work, study, and home demands change, so treatment supports real functioning rather than just test-day focus.

STIMULANT MEDICATIONS

Stimulant medications such as mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), methylphenidate (Ritalin), and extended-release formulations (Concerta) are considered first-line for many adults. They increase dopamine and norepinephrine activity to improve focus, task completion, and impulse control. Because they are controlled substances, I use careful dose titration, cardiovascular screening where indicated, and regular follow-up rather than one-time prescriptions.

NON-STIMULANT MEDICATIONS

When stimulants are not appropriate or well tolerated, non-stimulant options such as atomoxetine (Strattera) or guanfacine may be considered. These can suit adults with certain cardiovascular concerns, a history of substance use, or co-occurring anxiety. They generally take longer to reach full effect and are titrated gradually, with monitoring for side effects, as part of an individualized plan.

MEDICATION SAFETY AND MONITORING

Because ADHD medications, particularly stimulants, are controlled substances, safe prescribing is central. Before starting, I review medical history, cardiovascular factors, and substance use, and check blood pressure and heart rate when clinically indicated. Once treatment begins, dose titration is gradual and follow-up visits track focus, impulse control, and side effects such as appetite suppression or sleep disturbance, with adjustments as needed.

CO-OCCURRING CONDITIONS AND LIFESTYLE

Many adults with ADHD also live with anxiety, mood disorders, or sleep problems, and I treat the whole picture rather than attention alone. Where ADHD and bipolar disorder overlap, I sequence care carefully so mood is addressed first. Coaching, executive-function training, and routines around sleep and stress support medication and help sustain progress over the long term.

Why molecular biology matters to your treatment

Most psychiatric prescribing is trial-and-error. My background in
molecular biology — MSc from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with
research at the Weizmann Institute and Mt Sinai — lets me think about
your case at the level of biological pathways, not just symptom
checklists. That means fewer wasted medication trials and a clearer
rationale for every decision.

Who I treat

Adults, adolescents, and children with anxiety, depression, ADHD,
bipolar disorder, OCD, eating disorders, and complex or treatment-
resistant cases. I work especially well with patients who've been let
down by rushed 15-minute medication checks elsewhere.

What your first visit looks like

A 60-minute initial evaluation — in person at my Fort Lee office or via
telehealth anywhere in NJ or NY. We'll go through your full history,
current symptoms, prior treatments, and biological context. You leave
with a clear diagnosis and a specific medication plan, not a maybe.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About
Anger Medication

Things patients usually want to know before reaching out.

How is adult ADHD diagnosed before prescribing medication?

Diagnosis relies on a structured psychiatric evaluation rather than a brief checklist. I assess persistent inattention, impulsivity, disorganization, and executive dysfunction that began in childhood and continue into adulthood, along with occupational and academic history. I also screen for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and substance use, which can mimic ADHD. Medication is considered only after the diagnosis is confirmed.

What are the most common ADHD medications for adults in NJ?

The most commonly prescribed are stimulants: mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), methylphenidate (Ritalin), and extended-release formulations such as Concerta. They improve focus, impulse control, and executive function and are first-line for many adults. Non-stimulant options such as atomoxetine or guanfacine may be used when stimulants are not suitable or well tolerated. Selection is individualized to your history and response.

Are stimulant medications safe for adults?

Stimulants are considered safe and effective when prescribed and monitored appropriately. Care includes dose titration, cardiovascular screening where indicated, and regular follow-up. Side effects may include reduced appetite, insomnia, increased heart rate, or mild anxiety, which are monitored and managed with dose adjustments. Because these are controlled substances, responsible prescribing and ongoing oversight are part of every plan.

How do ADHD medications affect mood disorders or anxiety?

ADHD medications mainly improve focus, executive function, and impulsivity, and for some adults better regulation can indirectly ease mood symptoms. But stimulants can worsen mood in people with bipolar disorder if used before mood is stabilized, so I screen carefully and, where both conditions are present, address mood first. I monitor closely and may pair medication with cognitive behavioral therapy for a balanced approach.

Is telehealth available for adult ADHD treatment in NJ?

Yes. Evaluation and medication management are available by secure telehealth across New Jersey and New York, in addition to in-person visits in Fort Lee. Because stimulant medications are controlled substances, telehealth care follows state and federal prescribing rules, including monitoring and follow-up requirements. A full evaluation remains essential; telehealth improves access but is not a shortcut to medication.

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD if they never had it as children?

ADHD usually begins in childhood, but symptoms are often overlooked or attributed to other causes, so many adults are diagnosed for the first time later in life. Inattention, disorganization, and difficulty with follow-through may only become disruptive under adult demands. With an accurate diagnosis, treatment can combine medication, therapy, and targeted lifestyle changes for meaningful improvement.

Can lifestyle changes support ADHD treatment?

Yes. Alongside medication, structured routines, regular physical activity, and better sleep hygiene can meaningfully improve focus and follow-through. Skills training and coaching help with time management and sustained effort, while stress reduction supports emotional regulation. These habits can make medication more effective and reduce the need for frequent dose changes, which is why they are built into the plan.

What if I have both ADHD and another mental health condition?

Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder are common with adult ADHD, and I treat the full picture. That may mean coordinating medications, adjusting the order of treatment, and adding therapy to manage overlapping symptoms like mood swings or impulsivity. Where ADHD and bipolar disorder occur together, mood is stabilized first before ADHD medication is introduced and monitored.
